Corrugated Roofing Sheet Buying Guide 2026: Profiles, Thickness & Coatings

Corrugated roofing sheet looks like a simple product. Steel, rolled into waves, cut to length. But the quotes you get for the same project can vary by 30% or more, and a lot of that difference is hidden in the specifications.

Wave profile. Substrate thickness. Coating weight. Paint system. Each one changes both the price and the lifespan of your roof. Buy thin sheets with a light coating for a permanent building and you will be replacing the roof in five years.

Here is what actually matters when buying corrugated roofing sheet, and how to make sure you are comparing apples to apples.


Step 1: Choose the Right Profile

The profile is the shape of the waves, and it determines drainage, strength, and how the sheets install. Two profiles dominate the global market.

Quick rule: For residential and farm buildings, classic corrugated is fine and cheaper. For warehouses, factories, and anything with long spans, go trapezoidal or IBR. Higher wave height means stiffer sheet and better drainage in heavy rain.

Step 2: Get the Substrate Thickness Right

This is the single biggest factor in both price and lifespan. And it is where cheap suppliers love to cut.

Important: Ask whether the quoted thickness is base metal thickness (BMT) or total thickness including coating. A 0.50 mm quote that is actually 0.46 mm base plus coating is thinner than you think. It should be in your contract in writing.

Also watch the tolerance. Per GB/T 12754, negative deviation should be no more than 3%. Anything more and you are paying for steel you do not get.

Step 3: Pick the Right Coating

The coating determines how long the sheet survives before rust starts. Three options dominate.

Rule of thumb: Bare galvanized sheet with Z180+ coating is fine for inland projects. Within 5 km of the coast, use galvalume AZ150+ or color coated sheet with a PVDF paint system. For visible roofs where color matters, color coated sheet with a two-coat two-bake system is the standard.

Step 4: Match the Profile to Your Climate

  • Heavy rain areas: Choose high wave height (50 mm+) for faster water shedding and longer overlap at joints.
  • High wind zones: Use mechanical interlock or screw-fixed systems rated for wind uplift. IBR with hidden fasteners is a solid choice.
  • Coastal / chemical zones: Galvalume or PVDF color coated, never bare galvanized.
  • Snow load areas: Increase thickness and check the sheet's load capacity against local snow calculations.

Step 5: Check the Supplier

Corrugated sheet is a volume product, which means the market is full of traders cutting specs to win the order. Your checklist.

  • Material certificate. Confirm the substrate grade (TS250GD+Z, DX51D, etc.), coating weight, and paint system on the MTC.
  • Coating thickness report. Not just the zinc weight, but the paint thickness too. Standard is 20μm top coat minimum for color coated.
  • Profile gauge verification. Bring a micrometer to the factory or use third-party inspection. The wave profile must match the drawing.
  • Packaging. Sheets need edge protection, water-proof wrapping, and proper bundling for sea freight. Ask for loading photos.
Common shortcut to watch for. Some suppliers quote a 0.50 mm sheet but deliver 0.42 mm, banking on you not measuring every bundle. A 0.08 mm difference on a large roof is a lot of missing steel and a roof that will not stand up to heavy snow.

One more tip for large projects: Order a sample bundle first, measure the actual thickness with a micrometer, and test the coating with a magnetic gauge. A few minutes of checking saves a container full of regret.
