Hot rolled coil (HRC) is the workhorse of the steel industry. It is the raw material for pipes, structural beams, storage tanks, ship hulls, and the base for cold rolled, galvanized, and color coated steel. If you buy steel in volume, HRC is probably on your list.

But here is the thing. HRC looks like a commodity, so buyers often assume all coils are the same and only negotiate price. That assumption costs money. The grade, the thickness tolerance, and the surface finish all change what you actually get in the container.

What Is Hot Rolled Steel Coil?

Hot rolled coil is made by heating steel slabs above 1,700°F and rolling them into thin strips in a continuous mill. Because the steel is rolled while hot, it forms a dark oxide scale on the surface. That scale is why HRC looks different from cold rolled steel and why it is cheaper to produce.

In 2026, HRC prices from Chinese suppliers run roughly $440-620 per ton, depending on grade, surface finish, and order volume. It is the most price-sensitive steel product in the market, which also makes it the most common target for spec-cutting.

Step 1: Pick the Right Grade

Four grades cover most international buying. They are roughly equivalent across standards, but not identical.

Quick rule: If your destination is North America, spec A36. Europe, use S235JR or S275JR. Asia and general markets, SS400 or Q235B are fine and usually cheaper. For heavier structural loads, move up to A572 Gr50, SS490, or S355.

Step 2: Thickness and Width

Typical HRC range: 1.5-25.4 mm thickness, 600-2,100 mm width, 3-25 tons per coil.

Watch the tolerance. HRC thickness tolerance runs ±0.02 to ±0.10 mm depending on gauge. Thinner material has tighter tolerance. On a 20-ton order, a consistent 0.05 mm shortfall means real money. Ask for the actual measured thickness per coil on the MTC, not just the nominal spec.

Step 3: Choose the Surface Finish

HRC comes in three main surface conditions, and the price ladder goes up as you add processing.

  • Black (as-rolled). The cheapest option. Dark oxide scale on the surface. Fine for structural fabrication where the surface will be processed or painted later.
  • Pickled. The oxide scale is removed with acid. Cleaner surface for welding, painting, and downstream processing.
  • Pickled and oiled. Pickled plus a light oil film to prevent surface rust during transit. Recommended for sea freight, especially long voyages to West Africa or Latin America (35-50 days).

Recommendation: For international sea freight, at minimum spec pickled and oiled. Black surface HRC can develop heavy rust stains during a 40-day voyage, which becomes a claim dispute at arrival.

Step 4: Verify the Supplier

HRC is the most traded steel product in the world, which means the supply chain is full of traders who buy and resell without ever seeing a mill. Here is your checklist.

  • Mill Test Certificate. Ask for EN 10204 Type 3.1 or equivalent MTC showing the actual chemical composition and mechanical properties. The certificate should reference the actual heat and coil number.
  • Mill relationship. Is the supplier a mill direct agent or a spot trader? For HRC, mill relationships matter more than almost any other product because price moves weekly.
  • Third-party inspection. For first orders above 10 tons, book SGS or BV pre-shipment inspection. Verify thickness, width, surface, and coil weight. Do not rely on documents alone.
  • Coil weight verification. Weighbridge report at the port beats the invoice number every time.
The HRC price game is simple. Someone quoting 5% under everyone else is either carrying old inventory at a loss, or shipping lower grade material with a doctored certificate. Verify before you celebrate the deal.

Step 5: Know the 2026 Market

HRC prices have been range-bound in 2026, roughly $440-620/ton from Chinese mills. A few things affect your landed cost beyond the coil price itself.

  • Freight and routing. Red Sea disruptions continue to push Europe-bound shipments via the Cape of Good Hope, adding 10-14 days and measurable freight surcharges.
  • Tariffs. US Section 232 tariffs remain active on steel imports. Buyers shipping to the US need to factor this into landed cost.
  • EU CBAM. Early-stage carbon border compliance documentation is becoming part of the process for EU-bound shipments.

Sourcing tip for 2026: Because HRC price moves weekly, lock in quarterly or half-year contracts with a mill-direct supplier rather than spot buying. This protects you from sudden price swings and guarantees mill allocation during tight supply periods.
