Cold rolled steel coil looks simple on paper. Steel, rolled thinner at room temperature, shipped in a coil. But the moment you start comparing quotes, you see SPCC, DC01, DC03, DC04, and the prices are all over the place. Which one do you actually need?
Here is the thing. Most of the price difference between grades is not markup, it is material. Lower carbon content, tighter tolerances, and better drawability all cost money at the mill. Order the wrong grade and you either overpay or end up with cracks in your parts.

Cold rolled steel starts as hot rolled coil, then gets rolled again at room temperature down to thinner gauges. The cold rolling process gives it three big advantages over hot rolled steel. A much smoother surface finish. Much tighter thickness tolerances. And better mechanical properties after annealing.
That is why cold rolled coil is the standard material for appliance panels, automotive parts, office furniture, and as the base for galvanized and color coated products.
Typical spec range in 2026: thickness 0.20-3.00 mm, width 600-1,500 mm, coil ID 508 mm or 610 mm, coil weight 3-20 tons.
Grade selection comes down to one question. How much forming will the part go through? More drawing, deeper stamping, tighter bends, all demand a higher grade.
Quick rule: If you are buying for simple bending or light stamping, SPCC or DC01 is enough and the most economical. If your part gets deep-drawn more than 12 mm in one hit, move to DC03 or DC04. The 3-8% price premium pays for itself by cutting rejects.
Cold rolled coil comes in two main surface finishes, and choosing wrong affects both cost and production.
Also check the oiling level. Coils are shipped dry, lightly oiled (0.5-2.0 g/m²), or fully oiled. For sea freight, light oiling helps prevent surface rust during transit. Specify it in your order, do not assume.
This is where cheaper suppliers quietly cut corners. Standard cold rolled tolerance is about ±0.03 mm. But for precision bending and stamping, you want ±0.02 mm or better.
Here is the problem. If the actual thickness runs 0.02 mm thinner than spec, you are effectively paying for steel you never received. On a 20-ton order, that can be several hundred kilograms of difference.
What to do: Ask for the MTC and check the actual measured thickness per coil, not just the nominal spec. For critical parts, require a third-party thickness check before loading.
The cold rolled coil market has more middlemen than most steel products. Here is your checklist.
One warning worth repeating. Cold rolled coil is a common target for "weight games." The invoice says 5 MT per coil, but the actual weight comes up short. Always verify with a third-party weighbridge report at the port.
2026 trend worth knowing: Automakers and EV battery makers are now requiring per-coil r-value and Δr (planar anisotropy) data on cold rolled sheet, not just grade and thickness. If you supply to the auto sector, ask your supplier whether they can provide this data. If they cannot, that is a red flag.
